South Madison Farmers Market

After returning home from Vietnam, Robert was alarmed of the health disparities growing in South Madison. His elders no longer benefitted from the home garden. Instead, they resorted to the quick and cheap option of fast food restaurants. As a result, they experienced health issues like heart failure, diabetes, and obesity.

For decades, Robert witnessed Black and Brown communities become malnourished and systemically removed from natural foods. So he took a stance and was determined to bring fresh food to South Madison. He had a farm stand and various locations along South Park Street and Fish Hatchery Road. In 2002, he started vending at the South Madison Farmers’ Market. A year later, affiliates of UW Extension approached Robert with an offer - to become the owner and market manager.

At it’s peak, the market was made up of 37 local farmers, food processors and suppliers, offering the true essence of a farmers market. It became a safe meeting place where all South Madison community members can come together, exchange information and get to know where their food comes from.

Today, the market is one of the few Black-owned farmers markets in the State of Wisconsin. There are 3 primary locations which operate 4 days a week from late April until late October. Fresh produce, flowers, and canned goods are made available based on harvest periods on the farm.
